Head of Department of Molecular Ecology and leader of the Microbial Ecology Research Group. His main research topic is the biodegradation of organic contaminants, primarily petroleum hydrocarbons (aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons) and the diversity analysis of contaminant degrading microorganisms by molecular and cultivation based methods. Revealing the metabolic pathway of hypoxic degradation of monoaromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes). Invastigation of microbial communities of contaminated environments by „omics” approaches and by stable isotope probing. Polyphasic description of new, petroleum hydrocarbon-degrading bacterial species. Whole-genome analysis of petroleum hydrocarbon-degrading bacterial strains.
