Development of sustainable fish feeds

Feed costs account up to 70% of total costs in typical livestock production system (i.e. intensive fish farming). The feeds determine the productivity, the ecological footprint of the production and the quality of the final product. The main aim of our research is to develop new feed recipes for different fish species based on non-conventional feed ingredients (like: insect meals, agricultural or food industrial by-products etc.). We are focusing on the replacement of the less sustainable ingredients (fishmeal, fish oil GMO soy) with locally produced protein and energy sources.  Another important area of our research is the application of feed additives, e.g. pro-biotic, enzymes and (herbal) active substances, which improve the digestibility and enhance the stress tolerance. As a result of our work, increased production of competitive healthy fish meat production is expected.
